NEED TO GET INTO (OR BACK INTO) SHAPE? TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED

Did it just hit you that too much of your time is being spent on the couch?  Is clothes fitting tighter than before?  Are you losing your breath when the elevator is out and you have to take the stairs?  This might just be the motivation that gets you going and being healthier.  Here are a couple tips to get you started.

  • Consult your physician.  If you have any medical conditions, make sure to get the okay from your doctor before you begin an exercise program.
  • Choose activities you enjoy.  No one said exercise has to be miserable.  The more you enjoy your activities, the more likely you are to stay consistent.  Plus, you'll be happier because you're having fun.  The only thing that matters is that you're moving.
  • You won't become the ultimate ninja warrior over night.  Start with activities that you know you are capable of and fit your level of fitness experience.  This doesn't mean to go easy on yourself.  Give yourself a little challenge to progress you forward.  Continue to increase activity intensity as you improve.
  • Get some help.  Join a group class or hire a personal trainer.  If you feel lost when it comes to exercise, both will be great resources to get you going.  UCSD FitLife has some great resources to get you started.
  • Move some weight.  Resistance training is a great way to stimulate bone health, muscle health, and boost your metabolism.  Don't be afraid to pick up some weights in the gym.
  • Plan for success.  Plan your workouts/activities/meals ahead of time to increase your chances of success.  It's much easier to stick to a new routine when you're starting if you have a plan.  Also, it helps to look ahead at potential obstacles to maintaining your healthy lifestyle and plan accordingly.
  • Track your progress.  Keeping a journal or using a fitness app on your smart phone is a great way to see your progress.  It's much easier to see improvements when you can see them on paper (or on your screen).  You could even go high-tech with a fancy fitness watch or wristband such as the Fit Bit.
  • Have fun.  Enjoying your life is the most important aspect of being healthy.  Explore new activities, invite your family and friends to join you, or meet new people who enjoy the same activities as you.
