HEALTHY SNACKING

With many of our hectic schedules we are always on the go.  This makes it increasingly difficult to eat healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  It's always easy to run over to the nearest vending machine or McDonald's when we're feeling hungry.  Unfortunately this doesn't help maintain a nutritious diet and takes it's toll on your bank account.  Here are a couple quick and easy snacks for your busy day:

FRUITS
One of the easiest snacks to have on the go is fruit.  With such a wide range of options, it's easy to have variety and they are packed with nutrition.  They can be inexpensive too!  Buy what's in season since they are cheaper and have them ready to go at home.  For certain fruits that require some preparation, peel and cut or slice the fruit when you get home from the market and pack them in ready to go tupperware containers or zip log bags.

MIXED NUTS
Nuts are loaded with healthy fats, high in fiber, and filled with vitamins and minerals.  Nuts are calorically dense as well (don't let that scare you away) so it doesn't take more than a handful to get some good, nutritious calories in you.  Almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, and walnuts are a few options.  Some nuts can be roasted in your oven at home for some added flavor.  Beware of pre-packaged nuts and trail mix.  Read the ingredients as some of these will add other chemicals or "healthy" products such as chocolate and/or yogurt chips.  While these can be an added bonus and treat, sometimes they just add unnecessary sugars.

HUMMUS

Hummus paired with vegetables can be a great and filling snack.  Hummus provides a much healthier alternative to ranch and other dressings that are commonly used.  It can be found at your grocery store typically near the deli or produce section (typically refrigerated).  Hummus comes in a wide variety of flavors these days so it's unlikely you'll get bored.

HARD BOILED EGGS
Eggs have gotten a bad reputation in the health world but they can actually be a great part of your diet.  Eggs are packed with protein and the yolk is loaded with nutrition.  Cage-free Omega-3 eggs will offer healthier fats than generic eggs.  Boiling a bunch of eggs and having them ready to go could save you some inches in your waistline over some time.  Protein and good fats will help you feel full longer and hold you over until your next meal.

COTTAGE CHEESE
Another delicious option is cottage cheese.  Cottage cheese is another protein-rich snack that will help you get through your day.  Pair it up with some fruit and you'll have a nice balance of protein, fats, and other nutrients.  Pack it up in some small containers and keep ready to go whenever you need a snack between meals.

Spending a few extra minutes during your weekend or other time off can help save you inches off your waistline and dollars in your bank account.  Preparing your own snacks at home can help keep you from having to run to the nearest vending machine or drive-thru and loading up on chemically loaded snacks.  These are only a few options, so explore the perimeter of your favorite grocery store or market and gather up some healthy snacks for your busy work week.
