FEELING TIRED? BRIGHTEN UP YOUR DAY!

Sleeping well?  Eating well? But still can't seem to shake that coffee in the late morning and feel like you're crashing?  With all other factors in control, it may be your Vitamin D that is lacking.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is produced in your body during exposure to sunlight.  It is an important vitamin used in the development of bone and teeth.  It has also been linked with prevention and treatment of certain diseases and cancers.

So why the fuss?  A good number of people in America are Vitamin D deficient!  Why is that?  Because our modern ways of living have cut down our time in the sun, are most effective way to produce Vitamin D.  A lot of us are stuck indoors for long periods of times, some work odd shifts that keep us inside when the sun is out, others live in areas where sun exposure is minimal.

So how do I raise my levels of Vitamin D?
  • Increase your time in the sun.  Approximately 25 minutes is a good rule of thumb.  Of course, over exposure to sunlight could cause sun burns so still practice sun safety and bring your sunblock.  Everyone has a different level of tolerance to the sun depending on skin tone so know your body and act accordingly.
  • Food.  Food sources for Vitamin D are less efficient but some good sources are fatty fish and fortified dairy such as Vitamin D milk.
  • Supplementation.  There are some supplements out there that could be used if getting outdoors is an obstacle for you.  Actual sunlight is still the best option, but supplementation can help hold you over on those days you're stuck indoors.
