WEEKLY FITNESS TIP!

FitLife Occupational class, stretching out with a dynamic warm up. Led by Trainer, Jordan Mojica

GET UP AND MOVE!

Organized and planned out exercise isn't the only way to improve your health and fitness.  One of the easiest ways to overhaul your lifestyle is by getting out and just MOVING.  That's right, just getting up and moving around is already better than sitting on the couch with snacks and letting the clock keep on moving while you're not.  Most physical activities can be exercise in disguise, but if it's a fun activity, it you'll find it more enjoyable and more likely to do it for longer periods of time.

DO I NEED TO GO TO THE GYM EVERY DAY?
Physical activity can be done anywhere:  at home, in your yard (or balcony for the apartment dwellers), at work (during a break of course), the park, etc.  Living in San Diego, we have beaches that stretch for miles which give us plenty of space for some outdoor fun.  So round up your friends, and make it a day in the sun.

SPORTS
Have a sport you really enjoy (or have a history of playing), round up some friends or join a rec league.  There are plenty of options out there.  With a quick internet search, you can find something near you.  The competitive nature of sports is a great way to drive you to get up and move a little more intensely than you normally would.

SO MUCH ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES!
There really isn't a shortage of things you can do to get yourself up, move around, and improve your health.  If you're really out of ideas, here's a brief list:
  • Brisk walking or even jogging
  • Zumba or any kind of dancing
  • Swimming or water aerobics
  • Kayaking
  • Hiking
  • Table tennis
  • Walking with your dog
  • Golfing
  • Pilates or yoga at home or on the beach
  • Small exercises while watching TV or sitting at a desk (more info to come!)
These aren't the only ways to get active, but just some small ideas to get you started.  While some require a little education and/or equipment, the easiest are the ones that only require you and nature.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
While some of these activities might seem intimidating or challenging, you'll never know unless you try it out.  Trying out new, unfamiliar activities will encourage diversity of your body's abilities.  This not only can teach  you new motor skills, but can also help prevent future injury due to recruitment of more muscle groups with new activities.  Not only are there health benefits to trying out new activities, but you might find a new hobby and some new friends.  Most of all, by trying new activities, you can surprise yourself and realize you can do more than you expected.

UCSD RECREATION
There are plenty of classes available on campus through UCSD Recreation (click on this link and check out what is available!).  There is a wide variety of classes from boot camps, to yoga, to core conditioning, etc.  Our Spring quarter isn't too far away, so start thinking of what you'd like to learn next!
